Project description

SETI@home is the largest distributed computing project whose goal is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. The project uses radio telescopes to listen radio signals from space. Such signals could provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology. The SETI@home (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) grid computing project allows to combine the computing power of individual machines and cover greater frequency ranges with more sensitivity. Join our computing grid community and find intelligent life beyond Earth. Three easy steps: register, pick project, download BOINC manager. Help find an extraterrestrial civilization by donating the computing power of your machine!

Dan Werthimer at the U.S. House of Representatives

Thanks, Matt - a good read.

Sobering to find out (it was new to me) that there are only two dozen - 24 - scientists across the whole planet conducting the actual observations we help to analyse. Do we as a species really have that little curiosity about our possible galactic neighbours?

Is there an oral (question and answer) component to this form of congressional testimony? If so, can anyone suggest a link to a recording or transcript? I'd be interested to know how the congress members engaged with the issues Dan raised.

What does loss of net neutrality mean for volunteer computing?

Dr. Korpela has posted a new blog entry on Net Neutrality and why its loss might be bad for distributed computing. It includes instructions on how to comment to the the FCC about the issue.
